Roulette is one of the most popular casino games, because it is so straightforward to get started. All you need to do is place your chips on the betting board and wait for the wheel to stop spinning, to see if you’ve been won.

The simplicity of the game is one of the attributes that makes it the perfect choice for beginners, as you can be set up and playing within seconds. At SlotsLV we have a wide variety of different games, meaning that once you’ve got the hang of American variant, you can move onto Classic European version, or even try a live dealer version.

What is roulette

It is a casino game in which players place bets on the outcome of the spin of a wheel. They can place bets on numbers, colours, or a combination of both. For example, a player might choose to bet on all of the odd numbers on the wheel, or all of the red numbers.

It’s generally accepted that this game originated in France, which stands to reason, as roulette loosely translates as the French for ‘little wheel’. Blaise Pascal, a 17th century French mathematician is credited with inventing the mechanism for the wheel.

For history buffs, it’s still possible to play at the casino in his home town. However, if you’re not local to Clermont-Ferrand, then it’s also simple. to play online.

How to play roulette

It is one of the simplest casino games to learn, which makes it a great choice for beginners. In order to get you started with your first spin of the wheel, just follow these instructions. They will work for any of the varieties, you can simply adjust your betting strategy accordingly.

Place your bet

The first step in any online roulette game is to select the size of the wager that you’d like to place.

Our online roulette games give you the option to select different sized chips, either $1, $5, $25, $100, or $500. Next, place your chip on the table in accordance with the bet that you’d like to make.

Get to know the roulette table

In order to place the right bet, you need to understand how to read the table. The table is arranged into two parts, one part for inside bets, one part for outside bets. The inside bets section has bets that are statistically less likely, but will pay out more, the outside has bets that are statistically more likely but will pay out less.

Inside bets are single numbers, shaded in red or black. Outside bets are larger areas, enabling you to bet on all the red or black squares, all of the high or low numbers, and all of the odds or evens. At the very top of the table you’ll also find the zero square(s) where you can place bets too.

You can place as many chips as you like on the table, so don’t feel restricted to just one bet at a time if you would like to play more.

Spin the wheel

There’s no time limit at all in online roulette, so take all the time you need to place your bets. Once you’ve placed your bets, and you’re happy with them, it’s time to spin the wheel. Click the spin button and watch as the ball is released into the wheel.

Once the ball is in the wheel, the wheel will be spun and as it slows to a stop, the ball will settle into a pocket. You can be sure that this happens randomly, as all licensed casinos use technology known as Random Number Generators and undergo stringent tests to ensure total fairness.

Receive your payout

Once the wheel has stopped spinning, any winning bets will be paid out automatically. From this point you can choose to carry on by simply selecting another bet, or you can stop and switch to a different casino game.

Most popular online roulette games

There are two main varieties, American and European. The difference between the two is  a small detail in the numbers on the wheel. In European there is just one green zero at the top of the board, whereas in American there is a single zero at the top of the wheel and a double zero directly opposite at the bottom of the wheel.

This means that on an American wheel there are 38 possible outcomes, whilst in a European wheel there are 37. This extra slot affects the house edge, as well as the odds of each of the possible bets. We’ve included a table below to show how house edge is affected.

American Roulette

As we’ve just discovered, American roulette features an extra 00 square than the European wheel. This means that there are 38 possible slots, from 00 up to 36. You can place a variety of different bets on the board, known as inside bets and outside bets.

For information on the payouts of these bets, you can browse the table below. We’ve included the common names of the bets, as well as what constitutes them. These bets can be placed on both the American Roulette and the Classic American Roulette games.

Classic American Roulette

Now that you know all about American Roulette, learning about our classic version is super straightforward. All of the betting options and payouts for the standard and classic versions are exactly the same. The only difference between these two versions is how they look.

In the standard version, the overall look is simplified, which some people find easier to navigate. There’s a paired back betting table, as well a simple wheel. The game functions just the same, but without the ‘bells and whistles’.

The classic version is closer to a real life casino, with a beautifully designed wheel, which you can watch turn after you’ve pressed the spin button. The betting table is also designed to look just like the real thing, helping the whole experience to feel more lifelike.

European Roulette

It has just one zero, meaning it has 37 slots from 0-36. This means that the odds of landing any of the bets are slightly increased, as the house has fewer zero slots. Many people prefer European because of the decreased house edge.

The payout tables are just the same for European roulette as they are for American, so there’s no need to memorize more than one table. Of course, if you’re struggling, there is no rule against keeping a tab open with the payout tables on it.

Classic European Roulette

Like it’s American counterpart, Classic European Roulette has a more stylized approach than standard European. You can enjoy the look of a hardwood wheel and betting board, as well as the click of the wheel as it spins.

As well as a different look though, the classic option al so includes a betting oval, often called the racetrack. This betting oval allows you to place four bets that are unique to classic European, which we’ll explain below.

Voisins du Zéro, literally translating to neighbors of zero, involves betting on 17 numbers around the board (22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25).

Tiers du Cylindre, meaning one third of the wheel, requires you to bet on 12 numbers (27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33)

Orphelins, or orphans, involves betting on the gaps left by the previous two bets, so (17, 34, 6, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9)

Neighbor is the last betting option from the racetrack and for this bet you place your chip on one single number and the two numbers to its left, and the two numbers to its right will also be included in your bet.

Live Dealer Roulette

Live dealer roulette is the final option that we provide at SlotsLV. This option is the one to choose if you like interacting with a real-life croupier, just as you would in a real casino.

We use live streaming equipment to ensure you don’t miss a moment of the action and the croupier uses a scanning device so that the spins are shown on camera as well as on the interface on your screen. We have both the European and American options to choose from.

How to win at roulette online

It is fundamentally a game of chance and when you take into account the house edge, you have a just slightly worse than 50/50 chance of winning on each spin.

However, that’s not to say that you can’t have a great time and maybe win as well. There are some tips that you should bear in mind if you want to keep your play money for as long as possible, which we’ve covered below.

Know Your Varieties

Something that will stand you in good stead is knowing which variety you are playing. As a quick way of finding out, if the wheel has two green squares then you’re playing American, if it has one green square, you’re playing European. Remember, the house edge in European roulette is slightly lower.

Know Your Odds

We’ve already covered the payouts that you’ll get for all of the possible inside bets and outside bets, but how do you choose which bet to make? If you’re concerned with keeping your bankroll going then outside bets are a safer choice. These bets have a much higher probability of coming in, though the payouts are lower.

If you’re interested in bigger wins and don’t mind bigger loses, then you can make inside bets and reap the higher payouts if your bets do come in. Don’t forget, there are more options in classic European roulette, as you can place bets on the racetrack.

Practice for free first

If you’re not quite ready to jump into betting with your own money yet, then you can always practice for free first. We offer all players the chance to play any of our games for free, so that you can get a feel for how everything works, before playing with your own money.

Best tips and strategies for playing real money roulette

Choose a strategy and stick to it

Whilst there is no sure-fire way to win, there are a lot of different strategies that can help to keep your bank roll going and bring some structure to your game. If you choose to play with a strategy then it’s a good idea to pick one and stick to it for your whole gaming session. This enables you to properly analyze how that strategy worked for you.

Progressive and Non-Progressive Strategies

Progressive betting

Progressive betting strategies are based on gradually increasing or decreasing the size of your bet each turn. Some of the strategies will vary based on whether you won or lost in the last round. For example, in the D’Alembert strategy, you increase your bet if you lose and decrease your bet if you win.

These strategies often require a pretty healthy starting pot, making them a better choice for high rollers and more experienced players. However, if they’re followed properly then progressive strategies can help to restrict the losses that you can make, levelling out over time.

Non-progressive betting

Non progressive strategies are the other side of the coin and generally don’t take as long to master. For example, the most famous non-progressive strategy is to simply go all-in, placing all of your money on one outcome. As you can see, this strategy wouldn’t be too difficult to follow!

Whilst these strategies don’t always work as well for restricting losses, they don’t require such a high bank roll, or understanding of the game. This makes them a good choice for new or short term players.

D’Alembert Strategy

One of the most famous progressive betting strategies is the D’Alembert strategy. This follows a very simple structure that will only work on even bets, for example, red or black, odd or even, or high or low. You need to decide on how much you want to wager and treat this as a unit. For this example, we’ll use $5.

To begin, you’ll place your first $5 bet. If you lose the bet, then you increase your stake by one unit, if you win the next bet then you decrease your stake by one unit. You can carry on with this indefinitely, just increasing and decreasing one unit at a time, according to wins and losses. An example of how this strategy works can be seen below.

Martingale System

The Martingale system is another progressive betting strategy, which revolves around trying to recover any losses. Every time you make a loss, you double your stake. The theory is that if you win, you’ll recover all of your losses, plus a small profit. However, the risk is that you could start a losing streak and run out of bankroll before you have time to end it. The table below shows how the Martingale system could work, starting off with a $5 bet.
