What is Basic Strategy in Blackjack?
At its most basic, the best blackjack strategy is never to go over 21 points in a hand or, as it’s known in the game, to bust. You can stop this from happening – or, at least, minimize your risk of it happening – by being mindful of which version you are playing so you remember exactly what betting options you have available, being mindful of the cards on the table, understanding your chances of drawing a favourable or not so favourable card and choosing to hit or stand at the right moment.
At the start of every game, the dealer will draw you 2 cards and they will take 2 cards. Each face card is worth 10 points each, an ace is worth either 1 point or 11 points depending on the hand, and all of the other cards are all worth their face value. Games differ in the number of decks used so you could be playing with multiple decks of cards or just a single deck. If your blackjack hand contains a pair, then you have the option of splitting your blackjack hand. The most common split is to split aces dealt to you. Splitting is a second bet, basically, based on the cards that you have just drawn. To split, you place a second bet on the table and the dealer will create two new hands and draw another card for the first. You play this hand out as you normally would win or bust and then the dealer will move to the second hand and you play that out.
If you have drawn an ace, then your hand is called a soft hand. The ace has a point value of either 1 point or 11 points. If you draw an ace and a 10, for example, that’s a natural blackjack. A natural blackjack is a hand consisting of two cards totaling 21 points. Standing on a soft 17, for example, is a rule that you may see attached to the dealer behaviour when you’re playing. This means that the dealer may choose to stand – that is, not draw any more cards – when their hand equals 17 points and contains an ace. For example, the dealer may have drawn an ace and a 6.
You can also choose to stand on your hand. Standing is betting that the cards you have drawn will beat the hand of the dealer. For example, say you are dealt a 10 and a 9. That’s a total of 19 points. You could risk your hand by asking for a hit and trying to achieve 21 points with an ace or a 2, or you can choose to stand. The dealer will then respond based on the hand they have drawn. As long as the total point value of your hand is greater than the dealers but does not exceed 21 points, then you win the hand.
Doubling down is another bet you can make which doubles your bet and you get only one more card. You would make this type of bet if you have drawn a 4 and 6 or a pair of 5s. The chances of you hitting over 21 points are reduced given how low your points already are but the chances of hitting closer than the dealer are higher depending on what the dealer’s card shows.
There are strategy charts available that show you the most strategic bets for any given hand. These have been patiently created by players and mathematicians from all over the world and can be a good guide for beginners until you can begin reading the cards well enough to carve your own blackjack strategy.

If you have 8 points or under then the basic strategy is to always hit. Although the chances of you busting, or going over 21 points, are still there, the chances of the dealer getting more than 8 points is particularly high and you will lose the bet.
If you have 9 points and the dealer has 3, 4, 5, or 6 then the standard strategy is to double down. Doubling down is to double your bet and, potentially, win twice your original wager. If the dealer has 2 or 7 and above, then standard strategy says Hit.
If you have 10 points and the dealer shows 2 to 9 points, then double down. If they show a 10 or ace, then hit.
If you have 11 points and the dealer shows 2 through 10 points, then double down. If they’re showing an ace, then hit.
If you have 12 points and the dealer shows 2, 3, or 7 and over then hit. If they show 4 up to 6 then stand. To stand is to hold on your current cards and accept no further cards.
If you have 13 or up to 16 points and the dealer is showing 7 and above, then hit. If they’re showing 2 points and up to 6 then stand.
If you have 17 or more points then you should always stand, regardless of what the dealer has.
