Online Keno Rules

Back in the day, Keno used 80-120 Chinese characters (each representing a single word) from the children’s poem known in English as the Thousand Character Classic. When Chinese immigrants came over to build the railroads in the 19th Century, they brought the game with them; eventually, the Arabic numerals 1 through 80 became standard. When you play online Keno at, you’ll choose up to 15 of these numbers, then a random draw of 20 Keno numbers will take place, and if you match enough of them, you’ll win a prize. The more “hits” or “catches” you get, the bigger your prize will be.

All the action takes place using the online Keno card in your display. You start the game by buying one or more of these cards; denominations range from as little as one cent to as high as $10, and you can play up to 50 Keno cards (or “rounds”) at once, depending on which game you’re playing at Once you buy your card, you’ll see a 10x8 grid containing the numbers 1 through 80. Select as many of those numbers as you like – you can use the Quick Pick function to choose them at random – then mash the Play button and see which numbers the computer comes up with.

On the left-hand side of your display, you’ll see the paytable that shows you the prizes you can win for getting a certain number of hits – which may include a special payout if you happen to match exactly zero Keno numbers. On the right-hand side, you’ll see a running tally of how many hits you’ve made for each round. That’s pretty much all there is to online Keno games, although there are some special bells and whistles waiting for you at

Online Keno Variations

Many of the casino games at have been given the “New” streamlined look, and Keno is no exception. And as with the other games, the Classic version is still available for you to play. Each version has its good points. Here’s what you can look forward to when you play Keno at

This is the original version of Keno at, and still the preferred version for many players. Choose the denomination of your Keno card ($0.01, $0.25, $1, $5 or $10) using the arrows just beneath the 10X8 grid, then choose your Keno numbers; if you want to make any corrections, use the Clear button at the bottom left of your display. Then decide whether you want to play one, five, or 10 rounds of Keno, using the designated buttons at the bottom. It’s that simple.

Keno Draw

This is where the bells and whistles come in. Keno Draw gives you the added functionality of the “New” format, along with a streamlined display that’s easy on the eyes. You can toggle the Sound and Music functions on or off before the start of every game, then hit Play and begin choosing your numbers. For more added functions, press the “hamburger” icon at the top left to open the Settings menu, where you can select your preferred color scheme and game speed.

On the right-hand side, you’ll see four icons that you’ll need to know about before you start playing. My Numbers allows you to store your preferred Keno numbers and use them again and again – or you can use Quick Pick to choose numbers at random. Bets/Rounds is where you’ll select the denomination of your Keno card ($0.01, $0.25, $1, $5 or $10) and how many rounds (one, five, 10, 25 or 50) you want to play. Once you’ve made of all your selections, hit the GO! button and the computer will do the rest.

Online Keno Tips and Strategies

For as long as Keno has been around, there have been people trying to “beat” the game. This isn’t poker, though; Keno is a game of chance, and every Keno card you buy comes with a built-in house edge, which is the commission the casino charges for providing you the games. No strategy or betting system will help you overcome this house edge in the long run. Don’t fall for advertised Keno strategies that promise otherwise – Keno is meant to be played for entertainment only.

Having said that, you can increase the value of your entertainment dollar by making smart choices when you play Keno at The house edge for Keno tends to be lower when you select somewhere between 5-10 numbers, and highest when you select just one number, or the full 15. Note that the maximum payout of 100,000X is the same whether you select 10 numbers and get 10 hits, or you go 15-for-15. You can use an online Keno calculator to plug in all the different payouts and see what house edges you’ll be dealing with.

Smart money management will also help you get more value out of your Keno experience. Once you know the house edge, you can plan your Keno sessions to last a certain length of time, on average. Consider how much money you have in your account at, and choose the right card denomination to help you achieve your desired session length. Never chase your losses (or your wins) by increasing the size of your bet – or the number of rounds you play at once. And most importantly, never play Keno with money you can’t afford to lose. Keep this money separate from your other accounts, and only use it when you’re in the mood to play.
